Charles Strauss is an Assistant Professor of History at Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, MD. His research and teaching interests include the intersections of religion and politics in the United States, the Cold War as a global phenomenon, and the history and contemporary practice of Catholicism. This spring (2016), Charles is teaching an upper-level course for history majors on American cultural history from 1900-1945 called “Age of the Roosevelts,” a writing-intensive 100-level course on Catholicism in America, and two sections of a Global Encounters course on Modern South Africa. He will also continue revisions on his book manuscript, The Battle for Central America in U.S. Congress and the Catholic Church, 1943-1996.

Charles was born in the South Hills of Pittsburgh, PA and now lives in Gettysburg, PA with his wife, Elizabeth Covington Strauss and four young children: Anna Louise, Charlie, Tessa, and Peter. He is a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Parish, remains active in several community organizations, and is a devoted member of the Mount St. Mary’s community and a proud resident of the the Keystone State.
