The manuscript participates in the discussion of religion and U.S. empire from the direction of Catholic Studies. I am specifically interested in books that place Catholicism at the center of global and transatlantic currents in the 19th/20th C. It merges the cultural history of Catholic belief, practice, and material culture with the top-down perspective of diplomatic and international history. Missionary movements, the Catholic press, Vatican diplomacy, and papal fundraising drives each offer opportunities for interrogating Catholic internationalism. My intervention into this work is to retain empire – or better, imperial practices – as a useful analytical category for studying the history of Catholic internationalism in Central America during the Cold War period.
